Airship Management Services, N. Carolina: Rope Access Technician. 2002 - 2004. Rope access engineer, rigger, & crew. Assisting with launch operations & repair of semi-rigid airship N606SA. Tasked with modernizing safety protocols & equipment.
Tasked with creating a multi-channel microfluidic spectrographic analysis tool for a NIH grant, to characterize porosity of drug-delivery implants through skin-like membranes. Completed a ground-up re-build of a 1965 Seeburg AP2 jukebox that plays 50 full-size 33 RPM records, retrofitted for remote operation & control via arduino & a wifi bridge. Built a custom 3-phase table-saw, with VFD control for a five horse-power motor, & micrometer-level fence adj', for custom furniture builds requiring ultra-dense hardwood. Constructed two positive-flow laminar flow-hoods, for creation of dichromated gelatin film plates via spin-coat; & for mycelium substrate inoculation; for matrix study of suitable substrates for indoor growth of Hericeum americanum/coralloides mushrooms. Designed, built, & installed custom 720Watt inverter and battery switching system to supply 120VAC for a mobile work truck, to run high-amperage tools off the alternator.

Management: Management: Business payroll/accounting, quoting materials / labor for high-value jobs, conflict mediation, long-term business planning strategies for weathering industry changes, & implementation of a system to keep overages at or below 20% from job-to-job.
Cost-estimation: Development of cost-estimation strategies that protecting two parties from project overages, while maintaining high-quality workmanship & oversight. Customer retention stayed at ~95% over 10 years, through process tracking & optimization.
Risk-Assessment: Development of safety plans for keeping employees safe during high-risk ventures. By taking a scientific approach to safety plan optimization, we had zero incidents requiring hospitalization or severe injury over the 28 year span.

Shop Hardware: Extensive experience diagnosing, repairing, operating, & modifying a wide-range of industrial, laboratory & workshop tools; including but not-limited-to: high/low voltage elec' systems, automation via relay / pneumatic systems, multi-channel microfluidics, spectroscopic/chemical analysis tools. Experienced with most wood/metal-shop tools.
Optics & Optical-Hardware: Comfortable with a wide-range of opto-mechanical/metrological hardware, such as: pinhole assemblies, high/low-power laser systems (fiber, gas-tube, diode), safety interlocks, interferometers, op' choppers, spectrometers, repair/op' of Hitatchi S4500 scanning electron microscope, sputter coaters, deflectometers, elipsometers, etc'.
Botany, Micology, & MicroBio: Collection & identification of native plant species including edible mushrooms; using safe & established characteristic-mapping techniques to make a positive ID.
Climbing & Mountaineering: Accomplished mountaineer, trad rock climber & free solo enthusiast. Have taught professional classes in crevasse-rescue & rope-ascension techniques.
Holography: Holographies entrepreneur, creating analogue/composite holograms of Denyisuk & transmission holograms at home, with homemade DCG plates & thermoplastic films.
Huntington Gardens Herbarium, Plant Library: Worked as a volunteer to prep, mount, label, identify & catalog dried collected plant samples from around the world for botanical study.
People ask me what I do for a living and I often hesitate, because the answer is "well... A LOT". My fields of competence include rock climbing, construction, electronics, holography, creative writing, bio‑medical research, and botany to name a few. I have nearly given up trying to tailor my resume to one specific thing, and have instead opted to just put it all on the table and call myself a full‑stack engineer & research scientist.
I live in Los Angeles, CA, but I frequently go out to the mountains for glacier travel and climbing/backpacking adventures. I have a large workshop in the Brewery Arts complex near Downtown Los Angeles CA, where all manner of shenanigans goes on as I split my time between a series of active projects & paid commissions. I am always seeking more work or a fun new project. At the moment I am taking a break from school (was on‑track for a botany/optics degree) while I take care of my aging father. I am currently pivoting from my business as a general contractor to that of a prototyping engineer/fabricator.

Our 10k square‑foot workshop in downtown LA is home to a full machine shop, laser cutter, two CNC machines, a turbo‑pump vacuum system, two industrial sewing machines, and two electronics benches. Our crew varies between 2 and 7 people depending on the project. Two different prototyping companies live under our roof, but we trade use of materials, tools, and expertise back‑and‑forth as needed. Our cast of characters includes a few scientists, ex‑Boeing and Rocketdyne engineers, electricians, plumbers, riggers, and ne'er‑do‑wells. We undertake full‑stack hardware development for a number of industries, including bio‑medical tools, scientific instruments, gas‑exchange systems – you name it. We provide consulting on a variety of technical projects based on a sliding scale according to how fun the project is, or how much the customer really needs us.
Example project: IOT Orchard Watering Controller (see the Projects page). This project cost approximately $3K and took about a week including testing to put the hardware together, and another two weeks to finish the software package. The goal was to replace commercially available sprinkler controllers with a unit that could still be controlled via text messages if the WiFi went down, including status updates and sensor feedback to let us know when the system was actually working without having to drive out to the site.
