This is a map of an Earthsea-inspired place with only the name “Dragon’s Back” written in. I would say I drew this in 1978 – which is when I first read LeGuin’s Earthsea books.

This is a map of an effort to figure out plate tectonics on a globe but using flat paper. I don’t feel like it was very successful. I don’t know what planet this was supposed to be. I drew it in maybe 1982 (I can date it because of the style of graph paper I was using at the time).

This is another map of Santa Jimena, which I posted yesterday. This time its focused on the subway system, which was quite ambitious, as you can see. I drew this map before the one posted yesterday – in maybe 1979. I expect the incomplete one posted yesterday would have eventually served as the basis for a more refined subway map system if I hadn’t decided to change the city into a Mahhalian one.

This is a map of an alternate-California city I used to call Santa Jimena. The city later was transformed into one of the major Mahhalian cities, Jul Jaraom, but it retained its unique topography and layout. I drew this map in about 1980.

This is another map of Tabec – a completely different version from the one I posted before. This is a “historical map” in the style I would so commonly do – I would draw things in using pencil, and let them evolve over time.

This is a map of Youcalapeedus County, in some imaginary intermountain state. I drew this when I was 10 years old, I think. Maybe 11. I had worked out the population for each of the towns. The area is high desert, perhaps based on one too many family trips driving across Nevada.

I like the name Twenty-one-milesville.

This is an early map of the planet Mahhal – probably around 1981. You can see me trying to work out the math of the projection (using the lines on the paper as longitude lines). There are some stats: e.g. 1268 day year, 29° tilt…

This is a map of some chain of islands that I drew when I was around 10 or 11 years old. Note the excessive motorways from island to island.

This is a map of a place called Goobag. I think this was a D&D setting I ran in high school. This was a rough draft. I don’t think the campaign ever really went anywhere.

This is something I created at around age 8. It contains all the mistakes one associates with a beginning geofictician: too many grids, too many motorways, implausible coastlines… almost no names. So take heart, all ye crappy geoficticians: I have walked in your shoes.
